Bands To Watch: This Month: The Spruce
Band Name: The Spruce
Album Title: Self Titled
Q Where can we get it?
A. To be released mid 2010, “The Spruce” will be available via mail and in most independent record shops in New Brunswick, Canada. The album will be sent out to as many campus radio stations as humanly possible, and bulk orders will be available for any stores, shops, or individuals that wish to sell/distribute the album.
Demos of two songs to be featured on the upcoming release are available at www.myspace.com/peterbutler07
Q. If you were going to be compared with another artist who do you think the most legitamate comparison would be?
A. I have a hard time answering this question no matter how many times I hear it. I would like to think I’m somewhere between Dan Tyminski (Alison Krauss & Union Station) and Paul Stanley (KISS).
Q. Influences?:
A. Too many to name names, but anything that sounds good on an acoustic guitar… even when it shouldn’t.
Q. Touring?
A. No plans for anything extensive at this time, but some dates through Canada’s East coast are in the cards for summer 2010. At present, shows are taking place around New Brunswick, Canada.
Q. Followup: Prefer to tour or tinker in the studio?
A. Having spent time in a studio, and no extended treks on the road, it’s hard to choose. I love the studio sessions; the work and laboring over songs that have become so important. Any trips out of town for the love of the music have always been treats, and while the ambition is to someday make lengthier pursuits of touring, there is a lure in the idea of being a “stay at home songwriter”.
Q. Favorite band you’re sure we’ve never heard of:
A. David Picco and Jetset Motel, out of Toronto, Ontario. and Clinton Charlton from Saint John, New Brunswick.
Q. Name an artist that should lose their voice forever:
A. That guy from Nickelback. AC/DC has already perfected the act of writing the same song over and over again. I can’t, for the life of me, understand any allure associated with Nickelback or their “music”.
Q. Tell me about something you believe in strongly, not related to music.
A. I believe that everyone is entitled to be themselves, and should be supported in doing so, as long as they cause no disruption to anyone else’s life. The racism and discrimination of any group or minority is a shame, and the idea that people can not just accept the lifestyles of others really aggravates me. I don’t fall under any visible minority, and I embrace the fact that I can get to know the aspects of those ways of life because of my acceptance of anyone.
Q. What is one thing you can't live without?
A. Music, my family and friends.
Q. Why people should buy your album in 7 words or less:
A. Ten years in the making.
